Color Theory & Color Grading.

As the start of my discussion for the Color Page of DaVinci Resolve, I pose a question to my audience – Why does The HULK wear purple pants?

A lot of good and funny answers will get the whole session focused and lively. We all know that DaVinci Resolve from its conception is a GPU-based color grading software until Blackmagic Design acquired the assets from DaVinci Systems and made it a full-blown NLE.

So… Why does THE Hulk wear purple pants? Well, the pants have nothing to do with his super strength and temper but it’s all about COLOR HARMONY. Color harmony is the theory behind combining colors that are meant to please the eyes. It is the reason the original X-Men had yellow and blue uniforms. It is the reason behind almost all color design decisions.

As part of the workshops that I’ve given I always tell my audience that not because you can manipulate colors you’ll forget the fact that for every color decision made there’s a science behind.

Color greatly affects the outcome of the films that we’re watching. When I started to work on DaVinci Resolve I began to notice how color works on different movie genre. Here’s a good illustration from Studio Binder  The Psychology of Color in Film.

Based on the above images/ movie clips you can actually see how colors elicit a certain look and feel to every scene and how it manage to give emphasis on what the movie is all about. How does a character change? Is it a romantic movie? or a horror film?

All of these boils down to the color wheel, color harmony, and color theory.

If you’re watching Game of Thrones would you know which color scheme they used? And just a bit of information about it – it has been color graded using DaVinci Resolve.
